Hey, campground owners. Do you have any volunteers at your campground? I was at a recent conference and I was talking to somebody and they told me they had some volunteers at their campground. They were work campers, but they were volunteers. Now watch out. I know that you’re going to tell me, well, there’s a state park down the road and the national parks all have volunteer work campers. They just work in exchange for their site. Maybe. Well, guess what? The federal government can do things that you can’t and the state governments as a for-profit business. In most cases, you are not allowed to have volunteer labor. We have minimum wage standards in our country. The department of labor controls them. You must pay at least minimum wage for those who are performing services for you. If you’re a for-profit business. Now there are a few exceptions, but I’d be willing to bet most of you don’t qualify.
So if you have any volunteers on your staff, or if you’re thinking about that, watch out, talk to a human resources professional before you cross that boundary. Or if you’ve already crossed it, please do get in touch with a human resources professional and make sure that everything you’re doing is allowable under the standards of the department of labor.
